Day 16 & 17: Farewell to Scotland
[info]overheadbidniz

Traveling yet again!

Well this is it. It was the last day of our journey, and we had to go back home. We'd been mostly dreading this day since we arrived, since we loved it there so much, staying would have been absolutely no problem to either of us. Sure we missed our family, and friends, and things like Kool Aid. But really, it's been awesome, and we'd been having such a good time it was something we didn't really feel like leaving. Alana and Neil had been super awesome to hang out with, and I know that personally I can't thank them enough for not only their hospitality, but also helping us to get there in the first place and showing us a super wonderful time.

We woke up relatively early, as our flight was leaving at 8:55am. Neil was planning to take us, as his friend was driving us to the airport. Alana was going to stay home. We grabbed our stuff and waited til Neil's friend arrived. We said our goodbyes to Alana and headed back to Edinburgh for one last time. Neil waited with us at the airport for a bit, and we played around in the arcade for a few minutes. They had a Japanese UFO Catcher machine so we had to play with it. Course we didn't win anything but we tried! They also had one of those things where you drop in a coin and hopefully knock other coins into the slot. It was a 10p machine and we were trying to sort of get rid of our British money since obviously we weren't going to need it after today. Sadly enough... I ended up winning a good pound's worth of 10p coins. There went that idea. lol

We decided to start lining up to go through security, so Neil said his goodbyes and we got into line. We had no trouble getting through security, it was pretty fast except for Erin... She got stopped and had to have her bag searched. We're not sure what they were looking for, but she got through anyway and soon enough we were wandering about in the Edinburgh airport for the last time. We got a few things, a doll for our Grandma and a Highland Cow plush for myself, then headed to our gate. While waiting, we decided to take pictures in our fabulous Scottish outfits, as we both had on our leggings, the new scarves we had bought the day before, I had on a shirt I got here, and also Erin had her fedora on. Fabulous!

Hawt.

Finally we were able to board. I'm not sure I should have said "finally" as neither of us were entirely looking forward to leaving. We'd really grown attached to Scotland, and it just meant our stay there was over. However, we had to so we boarded and sat down. While waiting, I was pretty sleepy, and not at all excited to leave. I had a random thought, what would happen if you hit the landing gear retract button while the plane was parked? Would it just go... *PLUNK*? Would the pilot come over the intercom and be like *Shhhk* "Sorry folks, uhhhh, My bad!" *shhhhhk* I imagine they have safety set up so you can't do that but I wonder if it's ever happened lol.

I decided to film our take off, since it was the last time we'd see Scotland for a while.

Our next destination was London, but since we had to get up at about 6 in the morning, we desperately needed some tea. Thankfully we were still in the UK, so there was tea readily available!

I loved that they had milk in little tiny packages like they do sugar. When we tore into them though, they came out in a really thin stream that for some reason, likely sleep deprivation, amused us enough to film. I love the digital age, I can film things that are likely not film worthy, and I can either delete them or upload them to youtube! Guess which I chose! Muahaha!

Whee useful home movies!

Surprisingly, the skys above England were clear. And I mean clear. No clouds in the sky at all really, so we could get some pretty neat shots of some cities on the way there. I'm not sure what it was, but it was coastal and it was pretty cool looking from above!

Incidentally, the skies were also clear over London, so we got to see the city. I'd been there before obviously, but Erin hadn't seen how huge it was and this was a good chance to check it out.

When we arrived at London, we were hoping not to have any trouble. Last time was a bit messy, but this time thankfully we wouldn't be leaving security for any reason so we shouldn't have any trouble. When we got there, they didn't have our flight gate marked yet, we had to wait until about 11:50 is what the board said. So we had to kill some time. We discovered they had a Harrods!

I'd been to the big store in London but Erin hadn't. The first time I was in London, we went to the big Harrods. The iconic one. I had wanted to get something from there but everything was so pricey all I could do was steal a sugar packet from their cafeteria that said Harrods on it. And I did. Not ghetto at all! So this time I was determined to find something I could actually buy. This, however, was not it.

Sorry about the sideways video... I fail at camera.

We did end up finding jars of candy that we could afford, and the jars said Harrod's on it so we were happy!

We needed to find some London touristy things, as we were in London. It only made sense. We grabbed a couple keychains in a store called GLORIOUS BRITAIN. They had the usual as far as touristy stuff goes. Rubber ducks dressed as beefeaters, stickers, shirts etc. They also had a Marmite + Paddington Bear combo. For some reason.

Just in case you have that friend of yours who is not only a fan of Paddington Bear, but also loves Marmite more than he should, and you just could never find the perfect gift for them?

Outside the shop, they had a Beefeater statue we decided to molest.

We also found ourselves amused by another sign.

It's funny to us of course, because we call the actual toilets toilets, and the bathroom is a bathroom. So in my head I'm picturing someone sitting inside the toilet smoking. lol

When we finally found out our gate, we headed there and discovered something magical. They had like.. Chaiz lounge seats to veg in before the flight!

We had to get out of them though because we were starting to doze off. lol I think more airports should have those!

We got to board the plane and take off, and it was fairly uneventful. The flight movie was the new Wolverine movie, and I had seen it but Erin hadn't. We watched it and it was just as mediochre the second time as it was the first! I think Erin liked it but I'm not sure how much. It was OK. After that, we decided to try watching some Doctor Who. I'd been trying to get to the last 3 episodes of season 3, because Erin totally needed to see the episodes with The Master in it. I just love The Master. The last 3 episodes are the finale basically, and sadly enough the battery in my laptop started dying after the 2nd episode so we had to leave it at a heck of a cliffhanger.

When we were done there we were definitely over the ocean. And the strange thing was, the clouds were still pretty sparse. I think we were at about 37,000 feet, but we could actually see the Atlantic!

Neat! Can't see a lot, but it's definitely water! lol

We really didn't do a whole lot, just read some books mostly. Erin had found another book by an author she really enjoys, and I'd bought a Doctor Who novel in the London airport, so we just kicked back mostly. Later on we started to see land under us. Again with the sparse clouds! We asked, and the Flight Attendant told us we were over Nova Scotia. Now, that friend of mine I took pictures of her name in Edinburgh Castle named Shaylah lives there, so we decided to take pictures of us waving to her. Of course she wouldn't see it, but she'll see the picture and know we waved!

Hi Shaylah!!

Finally, we arrived in Philidelphia. It was a bit of an ordeal there as we had to go through customs and fill out forms and go back through security again. We weren't sure if we were going to make it to the next connecting flight, because by the time we got back through immigration and customs we had about 10 minutes to buy water, go to the bathroom, and head to the gate. On the way there, we mistakenly remarked that so far the trip had gone pretty well. Just as a reminder, NEVER say things like that. Things always go wrong to spite you. It's a law or something.

When we got there, I plugged in my laptop hoping to have enough charge to watch the final episode of Doctor Who, and we heard the news. Delay. Apparently in Minneapolis, they'd had horrible storms earlier that day. A tornado had gone through downtown and damaged a few buildings. Needless to say, the airport was behind and completely backed up. We were supposed to take off at about 6:05, and didn't end up taking off until about 7:40. I had to call my boss and tell her I was arriving much later than expected, and she was trying to get me to come in the next day anyway. Thankfully though, she got someone to cover me and when I find out tomorrow who it was I'll have to make sure to thank them and my boss profusely. Either way, we took off around 7:40.

While we were sitting on the plane before take off, they were pumping humidity into the plane. It was pretty hot outside, so it ended up actually showing up as visible. It looked sorta like they were gassing us, so we took some video. It amused us for a little while as we were sitting there bored!

The flight wasn't too much to talk about from Philly. It was pretty uneventful, and we made it to Minneapolis about 9:30pm CST. It was 3:30 am in Scotland when we got there. I was pretty tired. Mom & Grandma were meeting me at the baggage claim, and Erin was being met by her Fiance Dave. When we got to them of course there were greetings and exchanging of presents before we headed out to the cars. I was set up in a hotel Mom & my boss set up. I get a discount at Choice Hotels because I work at one, and my boss was awesome enough to set my mom up with my discount. Erin was heading back up to Duluth that night with Dave so we parted ways after a victory pose. Our trip was coming to an end and we'd made it safely back home so far! Victory!

Hooray!!

The trip came to an end partially, as we still had to get home, but we caught the shuttle to the hotel and got set up with no trouble. Erin however got stranded in Forest Lake with car trouble, so she and Dave got set up into a hotel for the night. The next day they had to get someone with a flatbed truck to trailer them and the car to Duluth, and they did make it safely.

We had a wonderful trip. It was way more than I would have ever expected. I didn't realize when we started this journal that people besides family would be reading it, but I've gotten several messages from people I've never met telling me how much of an enjoyable read this is. It's incredibly flattering, I had this set up simply to keep up with family as I was gone, and to keep my pictures and days straight as far as what we'd done for the trip. So I'd like to thank everyone that's been reading and those that have been sending messages. I'm glad to have entertained more people than I was expecting, it was an exciting trip and I'd definitely reccommend Scotland to anyone that wants to have an awesome time. Alana and Neil did more than they needed to to make us comfortable and entertained, and they were awesome in just about every way possible. Thank you guys so much! I will have to send them a care package or something!

While we were out there, we had sort of a quotes list set up for things that were said that amused us enough that we felt we should write them down. Since I'm back home now, I think I'll add them in at the end here.

Quotes from the trip:

"If you can't embrace the cock, just leave it out!!" - Alana, discussing the fact that Cockburn street is in fact pronounced "Co-burn", thus leaving the "cock" out of it.

"I can't believe I just paid money for a black man." - Me, after purchasing my first Jolly Golly.

"When I think about you I know I expose MY udder." Me, after looking at the cow bookmark on day 2.

"You poke it, and I stroke it!" - Erin, after we took pictures of us molesting the flying buttresses in Roslin Chapel.

"Did you see the dodgy bloke in the kilt?"  - Neil, after seeing a guy in a kilt who was wearing sandles and a fannypack with it, instead of the traditional accessories.

"IT WAS PANTS!!"  - Neil, discussing something that apparently sucked. I was not aware Pants was an adjective!

"Ohh if only we still had the banana hammock..." Alana, talking obviously about a banana hammock.

"Moist Groin Mucus". - All of us, after figuring out that visually it's the worst phrase ever.

"Are you enjoying the butt-snack, Elvis?" - Alana, talking to her poop-eating Guinea pig.

One last thing I think I'll toss in before I close off for the journey, things that we learned while we were in the UK. We learned a lot, mostly by observation.

Things we learned in the UK:

1. Yorkshire puddings, Indian food & Ginger Beer are a couple things I'll have to hope I can find in the states before I cry. Nomnomnom.

2. The Scots are Metal. As in, metal music. Anyone that would blow up an entire castle just so someone else couldn't have it, is metal. The majority of their history has been bloody, and that just plain makes them the cover of a Slayer album.

3. Leggings are the must-have accessory for the season.

4. Because of their love for stairs, the Scots must have the most epic calves ever.

5. Because of the lack of hygene, operations and dentistry before the end of the Victorian period, and lack of sewage disposal, Living in Edinburgh before the 20th century sucked. x.x

6. If you're going to have a car, better make sure it's a blue hatchback, or your friends will never speak to you again. (Seriously, do they ONLY come in blue??)

7. Scaffolding is the best decoration ever. I think if you are going to have a business in scotland, a scaffolding company is the way to go. Seriously that stuff was everywhere! Keep up the good work keeping those pretty old buildings looking pretty, guys!!

8. If you're going to have a tiny yard, make sure you landscape the crap out of it! Ficus trees and shrubs and flowers everywhere! Don't forget the water feature!!

9. Pants is an adjective.

10. Sporran is still Gaelic for Crotch-Purse.

11. In India, you can't make a movie without a choreographed dance scene. Ever.

12. In the UK, you can put ANYTHING in a can. And I mean anything. And any beverages are carbonated almost by default!

13. You can deep fry ANYTHING.

14. THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!!!

So that's it really. The end. Our trip is finished. I'm sitting at home typing this on my own bed, with my kitty laying on my leg. I'm back in the states, and I go back to work tomorrow. It's the end of our vacation! I'm bittersweet about it though, I loved it over there, and I loved being on vacation. Who doesn't, right? That little down moment you get when you get off a great trip and you realize you have to go back to reality? Yeah that set in. I'm just sorta meh. But i'm really glad that I went, and I'd love to go again. Anyone looking to see a beautiful country with a rich history should definitely look at Scotland. I highly recommend it. I really can't say enough about the place. The food was of course probably bad for me, but it was pretty tasty. The scenery was to die for, the people were pleasant, and well... they have highland cows and Nessie. What more can you ask for?

Well that's it. I've run out of things to say. I'm sort of sad to end the journal, for now anyway. If I go on another trip soon, I might document it here as I'll likely have some more overhead bidniz to take care of. But as for now, the trip's over, and it was a wonderful time. But as they say, all good things must come to an end, and sadly that is now the case. Back to the real world and routine. Thank you to everyone reading, and especially to Neil and Alana for being awesome and making this happen. Erin and I had a wonderful time and it's something that we'll definitely remember for the rest of our lives.

And now, I believe I've officially taken care of my overhead bidniz.

Day 15: The Last Day in Edinburgh
[info]overheadbidniz

Fedoras, Scarves, and Cloned Sheep.

Today is our final day in Edinburgh. We had very little as far as plans go. Some last minute shopping, packing our stuff up, and maybe checking out the museum of Scotland again.

We headed out around 11 this morning and immediately went to eat. We wanted to eat at a real pub, and found a pretty nice one near the Royal Mile. Erin and I got some fish & chips. It was really really good, much better than the mall ones. Then again, that is to be expected really. We also had some awesome desserts, I had a caramel apple sort of pie with ice cream. Nomnomnom.

Afterwards, we went to a few shops and ended up buying a few more souvenirs, and also Erin and Neil bought fedoras. Alana, Erin and I bought scarves. We were looking pretty fabulous walking around the streets I tell ya!

While wandering around, we saw this awesome street performer, He had a robot with him! The robot was programmed to play the saxophone and also sing harmony with the performer. It was neat, so we recorded a little bit.

We decided to check out the museum again, we had originally just looked at the basement where the Neolithic peoples exhibits were, so we needed to check the rest of it. We took some amusing pictures though.

They also had a dress up area again. This time for the 18th century. I feel that I need a tricorn hat.

Neil also needs one, as you can see from the main picture. lol

In one of the exhibits, they had what seems to be a Scottish Super Hero. I'm not sure what it was, because I didn't read the card on the side... I fail.

PLAID MAN!!! *dun dunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn*

I'm not sure what that guy's story is, but Neil pointed it out because of the excessive plaid.

Another exhibit they had was Dolly the Sheep. Dolly was the sheep that was cloned a while back. When she died, it was because she aged just as much as the sheep she was cloned from, and weirdly enough she died at the same time. They had her on a rotating exhibit was slightly odd, so I did take a video of it. I fully intend to add epic music to it sometime. To make it more dramatic.

After that, we needed to pick up one or two more things so Erin and I went on an epic search for one specific thing, and it took like a good hour to find it. By the time we'd gotten what we needed, we were worn out and very ready to get back home.

Also we found a freemason Sporran. Freemasons are SHIFTY!

We headed back to the house and started to pack. You never realize how much stuff you've bought until you have to cram it all in a suitcase. Gosh I hope our luggage is still under the weight restriction! lol

Check out the epic packing job there. Meep.

Off subject entirely, but while watching TV I decided to find this commercial that every time it comes on we all tend to erupt into fits of giggles.

It's the clothes pin. It's just so excited!!! I can't help it, it's funny! Apparently I'm not the only one, as on Facebook you can join a group for people who are amused by the clothes pin. lol (So of course I did)

This'll be the last update for a day, as we'll be traveling until late tomorrow night. Back to reality. Back to our jobs, and back to all the other "fun" stuff going on in our day to day. I prefer vacation! I'd rather just have money magically that I can use to see the world, see things that I've never seen before. I'll be staying in a hotel in Minneapolis as we arrive in the evening tomorrow, and Mom & Grandma are meeting me. Erin will be picked up by Dave to drive back home. The next day, I have to get home, basically drop my stuff off, and go immediately to work. My boss was special and scheduled me for the very next day, so very likely I'll be jet lagged. I'll also be unable to greet my family really, Just have to get on my uniform and head in. I have to go right back to it like nothing happened. I'm not really that jazzed about returning, I much prefer vacation. I think I should be paid to go on vacations. I watch the Travel Channel, I know it can be done! Bah!

I'll be sure to update the Overhead Bidniz one more time as we have to document our return trip also. I'm not looking forward to another hectic day of airport hopping, but it has to be done. Vacations would be more awesome if they didn't end. I was enjoying exploring, seeing new sights, and actually started to enjoy documenting the journey as it went along. I think it was a good way to not only keep everyone back home up to date, but also to document a trip where we obviously saw so much it'd be hard to remember everything when we returned. It saves us from forgetting details. It also made it easier to edit the imperial buttload of pictures we tend to take. If I had to edit all those pictures and videos all at once I dont think I'd ever finish.

Anyway, one more update to go. We'll hope for safe travel and hopefully less trouble in London! *Fingers Crossed*

Vacations need to be longer!!!

Day 14: Edinburgh Is Creepy!
[info]overheadbidniz

Cemeteries, Designer Hats,, and the Underground.

Today our only real purpose was to go to see Mary King's Close, a street from the 1600's that is still under the city. It's supposedly one of the most haunted places in the city, and it's still basically as it was left when they covered it.

We got up to go to Edinburgh and managed to get there at roughly 11 this morning. We went to purchase tickets for the Close, and the nearest time they had for a tour was at 7:20... at night. It was just after 11, we had a LOT of time to kill.

We went to eat first, we ended up in a pub just down from there on the Royal Mile, and of course ordered a full scottish breakfast.

Afterwards we just walked down the south side of the Royal Mile. Neil had an appointment so he had to go shortly after 1pm, so Erin and I kept walking. We found a neat church and decided to explore it's cemetery. Turns out... It was the creepiest cemetery ever. It was all in disrepair and there was a lot of graffiti in places. There was just something about the place that gave us the creeps, and it was in broad daylight. Normally walking around a cemetery is kind of neat, you get to check out the dates on the grave stones and the names and it's kind of a neat little history thing. But this one? It was creepy. We didn't even finish looking, we just sort of checked out one part then decided to vacate the premesis. It was just plain creepy. We both had the chills down our backs and everything. Alana suggested it might have been one of the cemeteries involved in the body snatching that happened during the Victorian period, but of course we have no idea. It was just... *shiver*

So of course, needing to get out of that creeped out mood, we ended up just sort of wandering back up the Royal Mile towards the touristy shopping places. There were some odd things of interest on the way.

Like an angry demon cow.

Some sort of Highlander?

The house of John Knox, one of the people involved in the Great Reformation in scotland.

A gate fail.

A collection of funny signs in an exhibit on the street.

While wandering down the Royal Mile, we got several pamphlets for various acts for the festival. They just sort of hand them to you. However, one was for a stand up act involving 4 people, and it was free. So we decided, hey, we have 4 + hours to kill, why not! So we ended up going to this pub down the road to watch some free stand up comedy. They were all really pretty funny, and of course they had to pick on us for being American, but the jokes were quite funny so we didn't mind. I don't really remember the whole joke, and I'd totally butcher it if i tried. But trust me, it was funny.

We walked up and down the entire length of the road, and decided to branch out. We went down Cockburn st, based on the name alone really, and then back to Prince's street.

Prince's street has a fairly large amount of really posh, expensive shops. One had the names Dolce & gabbana, and Prada on it so of course we went right in. We decided we'd try on some stuff! We discovered the hat department and basically had a field day.

I did manage to try on one shirt I thought was pretty, but it was super expensive so we took a picture just because that was the one and only time I'd be in it.

Also I was totally wearing my leggings today. Just FYI.

Afterwards, we were pretty hungry so we went back to Cockburn st and ate at a little cafe. It was really really good and by the time we finished there it was finally time to go to Mary King's Close.

A little background, Closes in Scotland are basically where tenement houses were. They were very narrow streets where people lived and usually they were fairly cramped. This particular Close was one of the busiest for shops and things besides houses. Apparently it's haunted, and there are several reasons including the Plague, murders and various things like it. In about 1645, the street was ravaged by the Plague. There were rumors that people who had the plague were walled up in their houses and left to die, but that isn't the case. They were quarentined, but they had doctors coming daily to drain their sores and things. The doctors wore heavy leather outfits and raven's masks, to prevent the "miasmas" they belived were causing the plague to penetrate their outfits and make them sick. Since, we know now, the plague was caused by infected fleas, it actually worked as the fleas couldn't bite through their clothes. The plague doctors looked like this:

Which is only a little bit creepy. They had the masks you could try on in the store, so of course we did.

Erin looked like she was sexy posing but really she was just holding up the mask :D

The close was eventually covered over by the modern city, but you can still go in. So of course that's what we did! It was an organized tour, and the tour guide was dressed as Mary King's daughter. She took us through the houses and things down there, and told us stories about what had happened there, murders, the plague, ghost stories. At one point, she even sat us in a room and turned all the lights off and we were told a fairly spooky ghost story. Erin didn't like that very much, it was VERY dark and personally I'm not sure I enjoyed it either. I'm pretty chlostrophobic, and not being able to see daylight at all kinda triggers it. I was able to mostly keep that at bay but I was fairly edgy during most of the tour due to that. They also had some mannequins set up in poses like... plague victims and things. It all sounds way more macabre than it was though. They sort of made it more gimmicky than we were expecting and the tour guide was pretty funny so it did lighten the mood.

One room they took us to was called Annie's Room. Apparently there's a ghost of a little sad girl in there, that was left by her parents after showing symptoms of the plague. People leave toys for her when they visit the room, to sort of cheer her up.

By the way I'm having to google these pictures as we were unable to take any inside.

Here are some other pictures of the Close:

After the tour, we needed to sort of cheer up and unwind so we ended up looking for some tea places to get some tea. The night was beautiful and we really wanted to relax as we only have a few days left. In fact we leave Wednesday. (sadface) On the way down the Royal Mile again we got another flyer, this time from a Baptist church offering free tea and coffee and some live Christian Music. We headed down there and grabbed our tea and sat down. We drank the tea and watched some of the music for a bit before realizing it was almost 9, and we needed to get to a bus before we would get home too late. It takes a good hour to get back to Penicuik from the city center. We chatted a bit with one of the people working there, she was a really friendly student from Northern Ireland, and she was pretty awesome. It was nice to see something like that set up in a city as old as this is, it was kinda out of place but refreshing!

On the bus ride home though, it did occur to us we just took a random flyer from someone we didn't know who was offering us free drinks. We totally took the candy and got in the van. It totally could have been a trap and we totally woulda fell for it. Oops. lol thankfully they were just good people spreading a good message to all the festival folks.

Well that's it for today! Not sure what we have planned for tomorrow, but hopefully it'll be good. It's our last day! (sad face!!!)

Day 13: Bollywood!
[info]overheadbidniz

Curry, Landscaping, and India Music TV

Today is Sunday, so nothing's really open and the bus service sort of sucks. The plan today was to go eat at an Indian Buffet in the city center. They had a pretty good buffet with flat bread, and different types of curries, and saffron rice. Alana and Neil had never been to this place so we sort of figured we'd all try it together. This way, we could also try lots of other Indian foods all at once!

The restaurant was called The Clippers, and it was actually very very good. The service was awesome too, our waiter was just about psychic, he kept taking our plates as soon as we'd emptied them, and was super polite. We ate a lot! I know we each had at least 2 plates of food, Indian food rocks turns out. I googled to make sure Des Moines has Indian restaurants just to make sure I wasnt getting addicted to things I can't get later. They also gave us Ice Cream for dessert, so no complaints here!

After dinner we took a walk around the neighborhood, to sort of let all the food we'd just eaten settle. Neil made sure we ended up at the Belgian Consulate for some reason, because evidently there is one. And apparently it's the only consulate in town. Which is odd. They have absolutely no ties to Belgium... O.o

Just in case Jean-Claude Van Damm is in town and having issues? I guess?

Afterwards we headed home. We were full of curry and just felt like relaxing. We turned on the TV and discovered the Indian Music TV channel. Yep. Music Videos from India! We were immediately hooked. Some of them were actually pretty catchy but mostly they were just hilarious. And lucky you, I've found them on youtube!

I actually like this one.. It's catchy and the guy is pretty hawt. But the best part was when it was on the first time, we were sorta meh on it until the guy started singing "DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNNNN DUNNA DUNNA!" THEN we started cracking up. The song was hilarious after that, it was like he was trying to sing his own theme song or something! "Hey guys I'm a super hero! DUN DUN DUNNNNNN DUNNA DUNNA!" *Cape whoosh* So of course I had to find the MP3. And now I'll add it to my mp3 player. Muahah!

This one is just plain hilarious. It was the first one we saw and we were amused instantly.

>.>;;

SINGH IS KINNNNNNNNNG!

When we were walking around we went into a gas station sort of shop, and found a few fun things to add to our odd things list.

TREACLE!!

Mmm Lemon Cheese. O.o

At the bus stop We sort of took pictures of each other and harrassed Neil with our cameras. Since we all had one except him. Muahaha.

We got a video of this which has a lovely ending to it... lol

This one was Erin and I taking our pictures with the camera timer.. But what we didn't forsee was the daylight thing... We turned out all scary and shadowy! lol

So that's basically how we spent our afternoon. Eating Curry and watching Bollywood videos. It might not sound like much but we had a lovely time!

Also since I took pictures of some more flowers and things, I figure I'll toss those in now :D

Day 12: Leggings & Landscaping!
[info]overheadbidniz

Landscaping!

Well today was sort of low-key. We had the basic plan to go a little ways down the road to shop at a store called TK Maxx. It's not TJ Maxx... yet it has the same logo and sells the same stuff. >.>; I still needed to get a shirt for my leggings! So we hopped on the bus and headed to the shop. It's near the Ikea, we were gonna go there to give Erin a shot at trying Marmite (Which is nasty, by the way) because they have it in individual packets in their cafeteria. We didn't end up going to Ikea though, Neil was worried that on Saturday it'd be too busy. Which is incidentally why we didn't go into Edinburgh today either.

We shopped around in Tk Maxx, and I did manage to find something sort of cute that I think will work. I'll likely wear it with my leggings soon so there will be pictures! Also we tried on hats and shoes.

Afterwards, we headed to the pet shop next door to look at furry cute rodents, and also to get supplies for the fuzzy cute rodents already living at the house.

While waiting for the bus I started taking pictures of pretty plants.

The pretty trees with the red berries on them are Rowan Trees. I think I need to add them to my favorite trees list, along with Birch trees. They're everywhere up here and I really like looking at them!

There are a lot of pretty yards here, everyone seems to really enjoy landscaping quite a bit as most of the yards here are small, but really really well landscaped. We attempted to take pictures of them on the bus on the way home, but it turns out it's really hard to do that while on a moving bus. A lot of them ended up being colorful speed lines, but we did manage to get a few decent shots. We didn't go too far today so a lot of the really pretty yards we usually see on the way to Edinburgh aren't included. If i can manage to get pictures of them I'll add them in somewhere!

Aside from that, we just went home, had dinner and watched some TV. Pretty slow and Low-key day today. Likely tomorrow too, as it's Sunday and again, Nothing is really open on Sundays here. I'm hoping to do a bit more shopping as I still need to pick up touristy things for people back home, and we still need to hit Mary King's Close and the Edinburgh Dungeon and we leave on Wednesday for home. I'm not really looking forward to it, I really like the UK and I hope to visit a lot more in the future, I still have a lot I'd like to see and I just really like the areas I've visited. I just really love it here!

Day 11: Rainy Day in Edinburgh
[info]overheadbidniz

Edinburgh is WET!!

Today we slept in. Yesterday was a long busy day, and after staying up until 2am updating this journal, we didn't entirely feel like getting up!

We decided we'd go shopping today. We didn't have a set plan so Erin and I decided just to head into the city and see what happens.

We were fairly certain we could get around, we'd been there several times and were just about sure we could do it without help. Alana handed us a map just in case.

It was RAINING! We'd been so lucky so far, really nice weather pretty much all the days we've been here, which is kind of miraculous considering all you ever hear about Scotland is the fog and rain, weather wise. But today, our luck ran out. It was icky.

We walked to the bus stop at Tesco's, and hopped on. We got off at a shop we'd wanted to check out since ariving. It was a charity shop with a bunch of apparently over priced stuff from Asia and India. Disappointing, but we walked down the road checking out just about every charity shop we could find. There are a lot of them, and I just love charity shops. We were sort of going toward an action figure shop but taking our time to do so. I had bought an action figure of The Master from Doctor Who, but I was unable to buy the Doctor, and really... You can't have one without the other!

Basically all we did today was search for a shirt or dress or something that I can wear with my leggings, and buy action figures. lol

Erin found a nice camera in a pawn shop, she was pretty excited. It's almost the same camera as mine but I think it's older, the zoom on it is a little less than mine.

We walked a LONG way today, we walked all the way to Prince's street, and I'm not exactly sure how long that took or how far it was, but by the time we got to Prince's street, we were cold, wet and really hungry. We wandered into the mall down there, partially to search for clothes, but also because we found out they had a  Fish & Chips shop. We figured, we're in the UK, we need to have Fish & Chips.

I had some in London the first time I went, it got me hooked on putting Malt Vinegar on my fries. :3

When we left the mall we hit one more shop before deciding we were soaked and cold and tired so we went up to a bus stop and headed back to Penicuik. I think we were out a good 4 hours or so, and it was raining the entire time. I'm so grateful that we were given such a nice day yesterday to get to see the Highlands at their prettiest, that I don't really care that my feet were numb by the time we got to Alana & Neil's. I have my fluffy slippers on, and i'm warm and toasty!

Not sure what's on the agenda for tomorrow...

Perhaps a Wild & Sexy Haggis Adventure???!

No, most likely not. But I wonder what goes on in a Wild & Sexy Haggis Adventure. Hmm.

Sorry for the boring update, We didn't have many photo ops today and it's hard to drag out "we went shopping" for as long as I did! I'm pretty pleased with myself! :D

Day 10: The Highlands Adventure!!
[info]overheadbidniz
Today was kinda the best day ever. No, scratch that. Best day ever. Today was our 12 hour trip to the Highlands! We got up at 6am today to head to Edinburgh to catch the tourbus. Erin and I went by ourselves. We boarded the bus and of course were really excited.

Please note, Any historical stories I plan to add in here are basically from memory, supplemented by Wikipedia. So I don't vouch for any inaccuracies. lol

The tour bus had people from Germany, Korea, China, Poland, Dubai... and a few others. We were the only 2 Americans.

We headed out of Edinburgh around 8am, and I believe headed west. The first neat thing we passed was Stirling Castle and the William Wallace monument. I believe Stirling was Wallace's last battle.

There's Stirling Castle up on the hill there, and the Wallace Monument is in the 2nd picture.

From there we headed sort of North. We passed by a castle known as Doune Castle. Some nerdy people would recognize it as the castle used in Monty Python & the Holy Grail as Castle Anthrax. This of course was something I totally needed a picture of!

From there we headed further north to a town called Callander. This was our first stop really, and we were looking forward to it. They had a coffee shop you see, and boy did we need the caffiene. After I grabbed a tea, and Erin got a coffee ( I hate coffee) we headed outside to see the next attraction. They had a Highland Cow!! His name is Hamish! We were very excited because Highland Cows are like the cutest thing ever. Also it was an added bonus that he was named Hamish because that was another thing we wanted to do while we were here, find someone named Hamish. So it was like killing 2 birds with one stone! :D Hamish was shy at first. He was hiding out in his pen. But after a bit he literally came right up to the fence so I got a few pictures of him from fairly close up!

Now the best thing ever though, was I decided to take some video because he was adorable and like... well I can't really describe the cute. You simply need to see the cute for yourself.

eeeeeee!! We were trying to figure out a way to pack him away and take him home with us, I really really want a Highland Cow. I'm sure I could sneak him on the plane and no one'd notice!

From there we started the trek through the countryside of Rob Roy Macgregor. Of course according to the movies he was portrayed as a tall, handsome Robin Hood type. In reality, apparently, He was a thief, liar, highwayman type with bright red hair, super long monkey arms, and he was really really short. (Apparently he could tie his boots without bending over, his arms were so long) He was the type who would steal from rich and poor alike, and keep it for himself. The tour guide told a story about how an old lady was going to be evicted due to late rent, so Rob Roy paid her rent off. On the way out of town, the landlord guy got robbed... By Rob Roy. He stole his money back. How funny is that?? lol The countryside on the way through was absolutely stunning. I could go on and on about how pretty the countryside is in this part of Scotland but I think I'll just post pictures.

We went further north from there, and went through some really nice hills towards what they called the Muir Lands. Which was funny to us since obviously that's Alana and Neil's last name. Basically they're marshes. Pretty ones.

We made it to Glencoe, and again, I have a complete lack of words for the area. It's absolutely stunning. (Incidentally, apparently in the Harry Potter movies, they filmed all the scenes with Hagrid's House in Glencoe) On the way in to the Glen (Scottish for valley apparently!) the tour guide told us the sad history of the area. It was the scene of the Massacre of Glencoe in 1692. Basically it was during the time of the Jacobite Revolution, Where the Jacobites were trying to overthrow England's king James II. in about 1688, William of Orange assumed the throne and asked for Scotland's support. It started a huge fight between his supporters and the supporters of James II. in 1691, William offered a pardon to the Highland clans to swear loyalty to him and he'd basically forgive and forget. If they did not, he of course threatened them. The Highlanders decided to go ahead and do the oath, in the middle of winter. Most of the clans tried to get the oath in before the deadline but some of them waited til the last minute. The glencoe chief headed to Ft William to give the oath but due to weather made it 4 days past the due date. He figured he was ok because he had done it, even if it was late.

Basically, orders were given out by William and the higher ups, and they decided to make an example of one of the clans. The one they chose was the Macdonald clan. The regiment in charge was under Robert Campbell, but there were really only a few Campbells in the regiment besides him. Campbell was related by marriage to Maclain, so for about 2 weeks he visited regularly. He ate their food, slept in their house, basically accepted their hospitality for that time. After that time, basically the MacDonalds were killed in their sleep. The regiment began killing all of the members of the clan, after accepting their hospitality for 2 weeks. The ones that ran were mostly caught and slaughtered, though some did escape to later on accuse them of murder. about 38 men were murdered that night, and another 40 women and children died of exposure soon after.

Basically they told us that story as we were pulling into the Glen, and it was very moving to see where this all happened as he was talking about it. It was very sad, but It is SO pretty there so here are some pictures!

The scene was very moving, very pretty. Aside from one thing. The bagpiper. Oh my dear lord the bagpiper. Now I love bagpipes. I think they're awesome. But it was fairly plain this man had no idea what he was doing. The things this man was doing to Amazing Grace just plain shouldn't be allowed. Now I could just tell you how bad it is, but you lucky people you, I took video!  Muahahaha!

:D

So afterwards, we headed towards where we planned to have lunch, Ft William. It's right up past Glencoe, and it's just as pretty. It's an actual decent sized town too, so it had just about anything you could need PLUS all the pretty. Erin and I decided if we suddenly decided to move to Scotland, that'd be where we'd settle. It's big, but not huge, pretty, yet still has things to do. We really enjoyed our time there, and had our lunch at a picnic table in the sun. Because, so far it had been completely beautiful weather. Sunny, warm, sllight breeze, none of that horrible cloudy hazey rain stuff.

Also in the parking lot I discovered... Crotch Rocket motorcycles geared up for long-term travel. These things had saddle bags and the people with them were obviously on a journey. This completely baffles me as my motorcycle is uncomfortable for long long rides, and a crotch rocket is much much worse.

We continued north to a place called Spean Bridge, and pulled over to photograph the Great Glen, (the biggest Glen in the Highlands) and to see the commando memorial, for all the commandos who've died in battles. There was a neat statue, and the scenery was really pretty!

From there we were in the viscinity of Loch Ness! Erin and I were of course excited as we are big fans of Nessie, and always had a plan to take a picture of our fingers at Loch Ness, bent in the shape of Nessie's head. So finally, that childhood dream would come to fruition! Our first stop was an optional trip to Castle Urquhart, followed by a trip across the Loch itself on a boat. Heck yes, we were paying the extra to take that for sure! When we got to the castle we decided to take the time to watch the video provided in the visitor's center so we'd know what we were looking at.

The castle itself was built in a spot that supposedly was visited by St Columba, the guy that brought christianity to this part of Scotland in the 6th Century. The castle changed hands between the Macdonalds and The Grants and various other people. During the Jacobite revolution, the Grants decided to literally blow the castle up rather than lose it to the Jacobites. They filled the castle with gunpowder and lit a fuse and blew the thing up. This is a trend as this isn't the only thing that was blown up to save it from the Jacobites. There was a barracks later on that suffered the same fate. Those wacky scots!

The castle is obviously in ruins, but you can walk around on it so it was really neat. I like when old ruins are covered in grass and moss, It's really pretty!

From the castle, we finally saw it! Nessie! It was so Nessie!

Ok so Nessie is pink with a french mannicure on her face... Shh! Woo! Childhood goal fulfilled! High Fives all around!

After the castle, we boarded the Jacobite Queen, for our trip across the Loch itself! We took a lot of pictures and were overly excited about it, I mean, how many Sci Fi Saturday movies have started here? So here's Loch Ness!

We took a really short video just so you could sort of see the area.

When we got to shore at the other side of the Loch, we were in a really small pretty village type place. I didn't see a sign so I have no idea where we were now that I think about it. lol

We headed east toward Inverness. I was pretty anxious to see Inverness mostly because it's the biggest city in the Highlands, and also I have a friend who was from there that was an exchange student in my senior year. We didn't stop but we did catch a glimpse of Inverness castle on the way through.

From there we headed back south again, through Perthshire and back into the Lowlands.

Near Perthshire we did pass Balmoral Castle and a few other places that we couldn't actually see from the road on the way back to Edinburgh. We stopped off at one more small town, where we tried really hard to eat hot food VERY quickly, as we had about 20 minutes to eat. I was dumb and got macaroni and cheese, so it was basically macaroni napalm and I didn't really get to eat at all. On the way out, I did end up grabbing a handfull of fries off my plate to sneak onto the bus.

We made it back to Edinburgh about 8:30 and Neil met us at the bus stop to take us back to Penicuik. It was over 12 hours, but it was literally the best day ever. From highland cows to the best scenery ever, to nessie hunting. I sadly didn't see any Highlanders with swords chopping each other's heads off with swords to absorb their power, but I assure you I did look. THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!! (No Christopher Lambert OR Adrian Paul, I'm crushed!)

If anyone's interested, here's a map of the trip we took:

Also please note that Erin is successfully sporting her brand new leggings. I don't have any skirts to wear yet, or a shirt to wear that's long enough to halfway cover the leggings, but rest assured I will be sporting them myself soon!

I'm exhausted! After getting home about 9:30 this evening, it's now 1:30am. I had a lot of pictures to resize, and videos to upload before I could share all of this awesome with all of you guys! I dunno about you, but I sure appreciate my effort! :D Tomorrow we plan to sleep in, and I have no idea what we plan to actually do tomorrow but I'm sure it'll be awesome. I like scotland! It's a beautiful country and I could see my self coming back a few more times for sure. Woo Scotland!

Day 9: Edinburgh Museum & St Giles Cathedral
[info]overheadbidniz

Vikings, Romans, and Cathedral sammiches.

Today was sort of low-key. Tomorrow we have a trip to the Highlands, so today we just sorta bummed around Edinburgh with Neil. Alana had a doctor appointment today so we just needed to kill some time before we got to meet up with her.

The first place Neil took us to was St Giles Cathedral. It's of course awesome because it's a cathedral, and because it's old. It was down in the crazy festival part of town though, so on the way there we were bombarded by people basically trying to get us to come to their shows by tossing pamphlets at us. I'm not sure how many we had by the time we got to the cathedral, but I'm pretty sure that we would have had a busy evening had we planned to attend all of them.

The Cathedral itself was pretty. It was pretty big, and had a lot of neat statues and stained glass windows. However in order to take pictures they made us pay for a sticker that allowed us to do so. So because it cost us 2 pounds, we took a LOT of pictures to sort of get our money's worth. I'll only post a few though, because not all of them turned out. It's hard to get good pictures of high ceilings, windows and things in a dark room with a digital camera from best buy.

There were a few things that did strike us as funny, as things often do.

Perhaps the caution tape is to warn us NOT TO BLINK!!

There was a little chapel off to the side to check out also. They were asking for donations to get in, but as I'd already paid 2 pounds to take pictures I figured they had enough of my money. They also had a gift shop, with overpriced things in it, and a cafe in the basement. The cathedral had a gift shop and a cafe. ON SITE.

Yep.

Anyway we decided to check out the chapel, and again, the amount of detail lost in my cheap little camera is fairly sad. It was very intricately carved and really quite neat.

They had some neat things in there. Like for example:

King George VI is buried in the floor!

Unicorn!

Lion & the unicorn :D

This cherub is playing the bagpipes lol

The ceiling was nifty looking. :D

When we left the cathedral we headed down to the National Scotland Museum. There was supposed to be an exhibit about Neolithic Britain up til the romans and vikings invading. That is just about my favorite time period to study, so many fascinating people in that time period! Boudicca is one of my absolute favorites. If you have no idea who she is, shame on you. She almost single handedly drove the romans out of Britain in about 64 or 65 ad. Anyway, we were heading there and went past the statue of Greyfriars Bobby again. Poor sad little loyal puppy dog!!

We got to the museum and there was an entire basement of awesome. First thing we did was take pictures of ourselves in roman and viking clothing. They had a dress up section for kids!

You'll note that both Erin and I fail at toga.

The exhibits were awesome though. We totally geeked out in there for over an hour. Lots of roman, celtic, and viking tools, clothing, carvings you name it. Here's a few pretty things that actually turned out picture-wise.

And of course we did see and do some silly things. As we are, again, prone to doing.

Rawrrrrr we are Dinosaurs!

ONOEZ!!!

Anyway afterwards we met Alana at the doctor's office then headed to a mall nearby. The goal? LEGGINGS! And I am pleased to note, Erin and I are the proud owners of some genuine Scottish Leggings. We don't have any pictures yet but I'm sure we will. Hooray!!

Tomorrow is the highlands so I need to get to bed. But rest assured, there will be a big update tomorrow! Yay!

Day 8: Glasgow & the Doctor Who Museum Exhibit!
[info]overheadbidniz
Today's plan was to head to Glasgow by train to check out a Doctor Who exhibit in a museum there. We're all fairly huge Doctor Who fans, so we were pretty excited.

We got up earlier than normal, so on the bus to Edinburgh, we were all sort of half asleep zombies. We had to take a bus to Edinburgh to catch the train to Glasgow. The train trip is actually not that long, it took about 50 minutes or so to get there.

Look Jamie! I caught Neil & Alana with my camera! teehee

When we got to the train station in Glasgow, I got to experience the pay-toilet. Yep. You have to pay to go to the bathroom in the UK in public.

SUPERLOO!

When we got to Glasgow, we hitched a ride in a taxi to the museum the exhibit was in. It's the Kelvingrove Art Museum & gallery.

We had a good hour until we could get into the Doctor Who exhibit, so we wandered around the museum. It's mostly geared towards kids, but they had some neat exhibits. They had some cool masks you could play with, so of course we all did.

There were sculptures, paintings, and exhibits about various civilizations like Egypt and things. Since I used to live in Louisiana, I was pretty amused by the fact that there were things like Crawfish and Armadillos in there. Of all things! We used to see those in our yard like.. daily. lol

Of course they had a lot of taxidermy. And since lately we're amused by bad taxidermy, this cat really made us laugh. He looks so surprised and nervous!

He's like :O!!!!

Also, for those of us that play Animal Crossing...

Coelecanth!!! He's worth 15,000 bells you know. (Incidentally, it WAS raining today! That's why he was out you see.)

Finally though, we were able to head toward the Doctor Who exhibit. I was so excited, I'm such a geek!

It had just about everything from the new series, aside from the model of the inside of the Tardis. That would have been awesome. Either way, Erin and I got our pictures taken with just about all the cool Doctor Who monsters and characters!

Lady Cassandra

The Face of Boe!!!

Cyberman!

Those freaking Weeping Angels! (Creepiest things ever!!!)

And of course, Daleks! (EXTERMINATE!)

They had some other neat things too! Characters, Costumes worn by characters, props etc.

The Ood!

The Scarecrow from the Episodes where The Doctor was human. (they were creepy k)

K-9!!

Centaurans

The clothes from the episode where the Doctor was human, and Martha's maid outfit.

The clothes worn by The Master in series 3, and one of the weird feral human costumes.

A Hath :D

the Vashta Nerada from series 4, in the Library.

An Angelic Host from the Voyage of the Damned Christmas Special

The clothes worn by Martha Jones in series 3, and Donna Noble in series 4

The Doctor's overcoat, Shoes, Sonic Screwdriver & pocketwatch.

EXTERMINATE! We got a video of this one, It was animatronic! You could push a button and it would yell at you.

It was soooo cool lol *geeking out*

:D

Aside from the exhibit, we did do some more wandering around. They had a huge pipe organ upstairs and for a bit they had someone playing it. Erin took a rather strange video of it...

>.>

Also they had a Dalek set up with a voice changer in it. We tried to get Neil to say "USE YOUR DIPSTICK, JIMMY!" like in the oil commercial, but he didn't. :( But what he DID say was just as funny!

There were other things to look at, Statues, paintings etc. We sort of looked around at all the things we didnt look at before we went to the Doctor Who exhibit.

We didn't stay in Glasgow very long, we didn't have a change to really explore it. In the center of town, apparently, there's a statue that pretty much always has a traffic cone on it's head. Basically people just kept putting the traffic cone on it's head, and the authorities finally got tired of removing it. Now it makes news if the cone is NOT there. It's funny in general, but also funny because of a discussion Roy and  I had once about Bayou P.E. class in his school running around with Traffic Cones on their heads. (It was also in GTA4, in their beer commercials) So to us it's become sort of a "You're retarded!" symbol. If you're just an idiot, you wear a traffic cone on your head. So this is for Roy. :D

And since we like to discuss leggings, because we do, we've had a development in the leggings saga! It turns out the reason we're not coming up with any, is we're looking in the wrong place! Turns out... they sell them in "American" shops!

Apparently we're the leggings people! Good to know!

On the way back to Edinburgh, nothing much happened. Though we did get a video of Neil telling a pretty funny story.

Back in Edinburgh, we headed back to a bus to get back home. It's not really that important but we saw a face carved into a building (I'm not sure if the people faces are considered Gargoyles... I should find that out!) that was fairly amusing.

DIABEETUS!

>.>

We headed back home and then relaxed a bit! And of course, that's where I am right now :D I'm not sure what we have planned tomorrow, probably shopping and wandering Edinburgh again. I like that :D

Also, bad joke for you.

It's a church you see. In the trees. We thought it looked funny sure, like the trees had on a hat. Alana suggested it was a "Tree-ara". Harhar.

Anyway that's all for today! woo! Doctor Who!

Day 7: Edinburgh Castle & Medical Museum
[info]overheadbidniz
Today was kind of an eventful day. I'll warn you ahead of time, I took an imperial buttload of pictures so I'll do my best to be picky.

We started out today heading to Edinburgh relatively early. Well not too early but earlier than we had been. It was kind of drizzly and cold when we got up so we weren't sure we'd be going to the castle as planned. We decided to go to some museums first to see what the weather did. When we got to Edinburgh it was sort of starting to clear up, but we decided to check out a museum instead.

There was one museum that Alana was interested in checking out, it was the Edinburgh Surgeon's Hall Museum. It's a medical museum. Basically the history of surgery and medical problems. I didn't take pictures, because I don't think it's allowed, and  also because well.. EW. There were not just tools of the trade from the victorian period, no no. Those were there, sure. But what was also there were casts of weird tumors, cancerous masses, birth defects... the works. Also included? Jars of things! Jars of brains, Jars of hearts, Jars of gangrenous limbs, Jars of cancerous limbs, Jars of fetuses... it was a tasty tasty place. Lots of things in there to make you cringe. It was very interesting but there were several things in there that just plain made us EDGY. Like the cast from the guy that died from a cancerous testicle. Ew! (They referred to them as "The Testicles and Adjacent parts") It was gross!

So anyway, After that? You're darn right we wanted to eat. We ended up at a local Japanese restaurant. I got some sushi! Oh do I love sushi.

The restaurant had neat chopsticks :D The service sucked, but the food was good!

Afterwards, it was actually sunny out. We decided to take advantage of it and head to Edinburgh Castle. I was pretty excited, I love castles! On the way there we passed this statue of a dog. He's a pretty famous dog actually. His name is Greyfriars Bobby. He has sort of a sad story actually, In fact it reminds me exactly of a dog in Tokyo named
Hachiko. Anyone that's seen the episode of Futurama with Fry's dog knows where I'm going with this.

Bobby was a dog owned by a guy named John Gray. When he died, the dog spent most of his life guarding Gray's grave. He did that til he died 14 years later. So they put a statue up when the dog died to basically reward him for his loyalty. I plan to get more pictures of him he's neat :D

Yay puppy!

We saw some odd sights on the way to the castle. Because it's still festival time!

We touristed around a little bit, because Neil & Alana decided to sit back and wait for us as we went to the castle. It costs to get in and they'd seen it so we sort of took our time getting there. We found some odd things like... Prawn Coctail flavored Pringles. >.> By the way, they're quite tasty.

I really shoulda bought one of each. >.>;

We also of course found one of those red telephone booths and of course ended up taking pictures in them. Because we're tourists.

We walked up the Royal Mile until we finally saw the castle! It's of course on a huge hill and is really castle-y.

It's of course a really old castle, the oldest part dates back to the 12th century. It's really pretty but at the same time very very imposing. I could imagine if you were trying to attack it it'd be fairly daunting, and also if you were being taken there as a prisoner I'd be pretty terrified. We paid our ticket and went inside. It's massive!! They had one of those neat portcullis things. I love those!

Even just at the entrance though, the view was nice :D We got several pictures of the view because from the castle you can literally see everything. It's really beautiful!

Since I'm pretty bad at describing things, I'll just post some more pictures! Here's the view from the inside of the courtyard right inside the entrance:

We peeked over the edge behind it and there was a really pretty cemetery too. I'll add some neat view pictures after that because there were several :D

Basically It's really hard to describe the castle in any other way. lol I have a ton of pictures and very little to say about them other than OMG IT'S PRETTY. So i'll just post a few more and then sort of move on to the stuff we saw inside some of the rooms. Sort of an image-heavy update today! lol

Erin and I found several things to take touristy pictures next to also. Thankfully we're not easily embarrassed, so we had no trouble just jumping right in and standing next to bagpiper statues.

While running around, I found this!

It has my name on it!! Rae! MINE!!

One of my friends online, Shaylah, studies Scotland quite a bit. She is learning Gaelic and everything. So she was super jealous I was coming here. So she asked me, likely jokingly, to write her name on a piece of paper and take it to the castle. That way I could take pictures of it in the castle so she has "been in a castle". So I decided to actually do it. This is for you, Shay! :D

So the castle wasn't just an outside thing. They had at least 4 museums to look at, many of them directed toward war and the military as they house a few different scottish regiments in the castle. They were all fairly interesting, we did take a few pictures of various things I'll just sort of toss in here.

We thought the flintlock guns were neat :D

This was a replica set up in one of the dungeons to look like it would have when it was being used. It was really cool :O

In the tower they had the Scottish Crown and Honors, they had a bit of history before you got to the actual crown. It was a good way to set it up, because otherwise you'd see the crown and go "yep! it's shiny!" instead of knowing what it was you were looking at, and how it got there. And from what I saw, they had a heck of a time keeping the crown and things because people like England kept trying to steal it. They even had to hide them for a few years!  So I took a lot of pictures in there, because the history parts were really neat.

I wish i'd gotten a picture of the Stone of Destiny, That's a pretty interesting story. They weren't allowing pictures in there though. Basically it's the corination stone. It was stolen from the scots in 1296 and kept and used by the Monarchs of Britain as the base of the corination chair. I saw the chair when I was in London but by then the Stone had been returned to Scotland. It was stolen back by some Scottish kids in the 50's but they got caught and it had to be returned to London. It's back in Scotland though, so we got to see it. That was pretty cool :D I love history stuff! I'm such a geek!

It's not much to look at but I'd known the story so I was excited :D

They had some rooms set up that were palace rooms too which was kind of pretty. The pictures I took didn't really turn out too much, but I got some decent ones of a pretty fireplace. Either way it was cool to see the history. In the museums they had some old uniforms and weapons and things to look at and I really enjoyed the history. Very much so. It turns out the highland scots were definitely the most interesting ones. They had the best costumes and stories.

On the way out, we went to the shops of course, and we found a few things we did end up getting for ourselves and also others. I wish i'd bought this.

:D

When we were done, we met Neil back at the town center and saw some more Street Performers and things. There certainly is a lot going on here! Way too much to post, and trust me I haven't posted nearly what I took as far as pictures go, if you can believe that! lol

This is for Roy. He drinks Cockburn port wine, and we always laughed at the name. :D Cuz we're immature.

When we got back home on the bus, it had started to rain again. God was nice enough to keep it sunny while we were in the castle, then let it go back icky again when we were done. Darn decent of him!

When we got home Alana had cooked us dinner. We had some roast beef, yorkshire puddings (which are freaking awesome and darn it I may need to find a place to buy them in the states, or learn to make them!) and some parsnips. And for dessert... SPOTTED DICK!

That's right! You heard me! This of course spawned lots of silly jokes. Like... I dropped a piece down my shirt. So Alana immediately posted that I had spotted dick down my cleavage as her Facebook Status. I pulled it back out of my shirt and ate it :D

It's actually really good though, it's basically a bread with fruit, usually currants, in it. It's steamed and we ate it with custard. It's pretty yummy! Of course.. Spotted dick. So we had to giggle.

Well kiddies I'm about pictured out, so I think I'll sign out for now. Tomorrow we need to get up early to head to Glasgow to check out the Doctor Who museum exhibit. I'm so excited, we get to see Glasgow AND I'm a complete Doctor Who geek, I'm not sure which part I'm more excited about! ee!!!
